Variance of Fates stars a smaller cast of main characters, and follows a different formula than any of the rest of the Iravelon games.

500 years before the events of Shades of Resonance would take place, a strange vessel from the sky crashes on Idavoll.  The Royal Council of Sirvion, under order of the king, commissions the creation of a large complex around the ruins in order to study the remains.  Several years later, with the facility completed, work has begun on studying and attempting to reconstruct the vessel.  William, a brilliant young man of 22 years, is made the Lead Organizer of the project and Representative of the Royal Council.  William's best friend, Marcus, works with the crew of alchemists and scholars in studying the damaged craft.  While working in the ship's engine room, Marcus, along with William, accidentally activates part of the ship's systems and find that the vessel's main system requires a device that has been shattered and now lies across Idavoll.

Unfortunately, not only does the device lie scattered across Idavoll... its fragments have been thrown into different points in Idavoll's history, meaning that Marcus and William must journey across their world's geography and history in order to find these fragments.  The ship itself gives them no opportunity to object, as it activates the only remaining piece of the device to send them to a point in their planet's distant past.

The two must gather the remaining pieces of the otherworldly device and try to find their way back to their own time, without interrupting the normal chain of events through time.
